Guwahati: Robin Kumar, the Barpeta Superintendent of Police (SP) has found himself thrust into the limelight for been treating COVID-19 patients in the district, all thanks to his medical background. Kumar, a 2013 batch IPS officer specialist in medicine (MBBS, MD), is performing the duties of both a police officer and a doctor.
Taking note of his immense contribution amid the nation's battle against the dreaded coronavirus, India's Vice President Venkaiah Naidu in a tweet wrote, "It is a great gesture of service. My appreciation to Shri Robin Kumar, Barpeta District SP in Assam for performing the dual role of a doctor & police officer to fight COVID-19 pandemic."
Kumar is currently running a 50-bedded COVID care centre with four ICUs in Barpeta Police Reserve for the police personnel of the district and their families. The centre also has 32 general beds and 14 aftercare beds for patients. Kumar is also planning to hold health camps for women and elderly people amid the ongoing crisis period.
Kumar, who is a native of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, first organised a health check-up camp a few years ago at Tezpur during his previous posting in Sonitpur district.
When the pandemic struck, he took permission of Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta to open a COVID care centre for the police personnel in Barpeta, which is now running smoothly.
The SP has also been praised by Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his immense contribution in the fight against the pandemic." An Assam Police warrior in the truest sense. Great gesture of service to humanity by Barpeta SP Dr Robin Kumar, utilising his skills to help doctors and healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19," Sonowal had written.
The IPS Association has also been all-praise for the f"First Line Of Defence! Dr. Robin Kumar, SP, @Barpeta_Police, set an example by leading from the front. In the nation's fight against coronavirus, Dr. Kumar, MD (Medicine), personally convened a health camp," read a tweet sent out by the body.
