GUWAHATI: Eminent Satriya proponent and the Burha Satriya of the Barpeta Satra, Basistha Dev Sharma embraced death on Saturday. He passed away at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The cultural spectrum of Assam would face a major loss by the death of the eminent persona.

The exponent had been critically ill for some time now and under medical supervision in the premier medical facility. According to medical reports, he succumbed to his illness at 4.56 pm today. He was undergoing intensive treatment for the last few days under the care of medical experts at Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Back during the Covid pandemic in 2020, Dev Sharma fell prey to Covid-19. Since then, his health has started to deteriorate slowly.

Prior to this, in the year 2017, Sharma was selected for the national-level Srimanta Sankardev Award by the Assam Government.

The Satriya maestro was born in the year 1938. He contributed immensely to the promotion of Sattriya dance, music and the folk culture of the state.

His achievements include the Asom Sanskriti Mahasabha, Asom Jatiya Vidyalaya Fellowship, Sri Sri Mathuradas Burha Ata award, Sri Sri Badala Ata award and Sankar-Madhav award.

According to reports updated yesterday, Dev Sharma's health was deteriorating severely. The people of Barpeta were organising various programmes of prayer and well-wishes for the maestro's betterment.

The people of Barpeta organised an earthen lamp lighting ceremony near the District Library of Barpeta, while Sharma was still undergoing treatment. They offered their prayers to God and wished for the maestro's well-being.
