Mankachar: A
total lockdown was seen from 11 AM to 3 PM on Tuesday as shops were completely
shut, businesses were closed, and hardly any public transport was seen on the roads
of South Salmara-Mankachar of Assam as people supported the cause of the
farmers and decided to support the Bharat Bandh (Nationwide shutdown) which has
been called against the 3 farm laws passed by the Parliament recently.
Several organizations and the public in the South
Salmara-Mancachar district supported the nationwide shutdown.
Farmers are of the opinion that provisions of these
laws are against the interest of the farmers of the nation and they would not
be benefited by these laws implemented by the government. They have been
demanding a repeal of the laws.
In the midst of a standoff with the government over new
agricultural laws, the national strike by farmers in India was observed on
Tuesday from 11 AM to 3 PM.
The nationwide shutdown was observed in around 10,000
places in 25 Indian states.
Over 15 opposition parties, including the Indian
National Congress (INC), Aam Admi Party (AAP), and many more along with several
trade unions backed the protest call.
Most of the protesting peasants are from the northern
states of Punjab and Haryana and belong to the country's richest agricultural
communities.
Thousands of farmers across the country have been
protesting at the Delhi border against these laws since last month.
The protesting farmers have called for this 'peaceful'
protest ahead of the sixth round of talks with the government on the recently
passed agriculture laws in parliament. However, the Centre has released
COVID-19 guidelines to be followed during the nationwide strike.
Another round of talks with the Government is scheduled for Wednesday (December 9).
