Biates of Dima Hasao celebrate ‘Nulding Kut’ festival with enthusiasm in Haflong

Haflong: The people belonging to Biate community of Dima Hasao celebrated Nulding Kut, the festival of renewal of life, in different places like Thuruk and Haflong of Dima Hasao district on Saturday with traditional fervor and gaiety.

At Haflong, the Nulding Kut celebration committee organized a day-long programme at Fiangpui Playground, wherein Luaia Nampui, retired IRS officer and president of Gen. Biate Cultural Organization attended as the chief guest while Rev Lalthantluanga Thiaite, Executive Secretary(sr) BPC Synod and retired Rev P C Lura Darnei attended as the guests of honour.

The day’s programme included traditional games and sports, dance and folklore. Nulding Kut is one of the many festivals of the Biate tribe which has been celebrated since time immemorial.

In the earlier days, the ancestors used to celebrate this festival during the early part of January every year on different dates in different villages. The ancient people considered this festival as a symbol for the beginning of a new year.

The people observe this remarkable day by performing religious rites followed by social functions like the performance of cultural dances, singing of folk songs, drinking of liquor (Zu) and merry-making. People of all ages, especially the women, dress in their colorful customary attire (mpuan). People also play various games all day long.
