Mangaldai: ‘Say no to all kinds of crackers, ‘Celebrate pollution-free Diwali’ and ‘Think of your environment and creatures around you’, these are some of the slogans highlighted by the participating contestants in the placard-making contest among the students of Mangaldai.
As many as 300 students took part in this contest organized by North East Ramdhenu- a Mangaldai based NGO, at Shankar Nagar on Friday as a part of their series of events to create awareness on Green Diwali celebration and to promote the use of traditional earthen lamps manufactured by the local artisans. Young students were also administered pledge against the use of fire crackers and supporting a Green Diwali with traditional pollution-free diyas which was followed by an awareness procession.
“Students are the future citizens of our country and we want to involve them in celebrating the festival of lights without harming our surroundings. On Saturday, we organized a placard- making competition and exhibition where more than 300 students from different schools took part. This will be followed by the annual Diwali celebration on Sunday evening at Mangaldai Gandhi Smriti Uddyan where we will be lighting symbolic 2,019 diyas made by our local artisans,” said Biswajit Saikia, president of North East Ramdhenu.
On the other hand, the Mangaldai Municipal authority, in association with a large number of SHG members under NULM, on Saturday took out an awareness procession in Mangaldai town for a green and clean Diwali.
Both the Parliamentarian and the legislator of Mangaldai, Dilip Saikia and Gurujyoti Das, and chairman of the Municipal Board, Manik Sil Sarma also took part in the rally.
