Guwahati: This indeed is good news and a matter of big relief for the flood-affected farmers of Dhemaji that the Agriculture department of the Assam government has come up for their rescue.

The massive damages and destructions caused by the flood created by the overflowing water level of Jiyadhal River in Dhemaji had left more than a thousand farmers helpless and heartbroken. They had no paddy fields; no crops left in their fields, their houses were underwater and had lost their livestock to the ravages of the flood. Amidst this bad and disheartening atmosphere, there appeared a reason for the farmers to find a ray of hope as the agriculture department of the government of Assam took up a unique initiative of providing rice crops to the flood-affected farmers.

As per an instruction issued by the Agriculture department of the state, the agriculture departments of each district were asked to plant paddy seeds for public benefit. Following that instruction, a hundred bighas of paddy lands in Dhemaji were planted with paddy seeds of Ranjit rice. The crops, thus, after turning into paddy crops, were distributed among not less than fifteen hundred families of the Dhemaji constituency. The MLA of the constituency Ranuj Pegu took the pleasure of inaugurating the crop distribution programme in presence of Assistant Commissioner Hemanta Dutta, Zila Parishad member Barnali Borgohain and several farmers from the constituency.

MLA Ranuj Pegu, being a part of the crop distribution programme, said, "Dhemaji had long been known as a flood-ravaged state, but in the last three years the government of the state has taken the initiative towards helping the flood victims for which the number of people affected by flood has comparative come down. To speak the truth, we had no relief camp in the current situation of flood and the excessive flow of water from Jiyadhal River has affected four to five panchayats of the constituency.

Pegu further adds that, "In addition to this, the agriculture department has taken the initiative this year and we took up community nursery and thus, we succeeded in providing paddy crops to the farmers right on time.
