Bill to stop polygamy to be brought soon: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

NAGAON: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the Puranigudam Bhimorgaon-based Sri Saibaba Temple and Barhampur Bherbheri-based Mahamrityunjay Temple here.

During his trip to the district, Sarma also unveiled the statue of Baba Bhrigu Maharaj who initiated steps to set up Asia’s largest temple of Lord Shiva in the Barhampur Bherbheri area some decades back.

While speaking to some local media persons here, Sarma said that the Election Commission is an autonomous agency in the country and it does not have to abide by the instructions of the State Government. Advocating for changing the names of a few constituencies in Barak Valley, Sarma said that the State Government submitted an official proposal for it to the autonomous agency. “But the agency is not bound to accept our request,” he asserted.

Admitting the ongoing price hike in essential commodities, he said that his government was trying to provide relief to the people in many ways by restricting to a specific limit the prices of petroleum products like petrol and diesel across the State, unlike most of the Congress-ruled states in the country. He added that the Assam Government would issue 40 lakh new ration cards to the people of the State.

Answering a question asked by a scribe in connection with the increase of the State’s population, Sarma said that the government cannot take any action against those who do not pay heed to population control, except disqualifying them for the benefits of government schemes or projects. “But we are taking initiative to bring a specific bill to stop polygamy in the State soon,” he added. During his visit, Sarma was accompanied by MLA Rupak Sarma, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Rajen Gohain, Barhampur BJP MLA Jitu Goswami and other senior party workers of the district.
