Tezpur: The 143th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Birsa Munda was celebrated by Manshiri Anchalik Adivasi Juba Samittee at Borghuli Primary School premises in Sonitpur district on Thursday.

The programme started with the lighting of the earthen lamp and it was followed by floral tributes to the Birsa by Ranjit Kujur, principal of St John’s School Balipara, Father Florence, principal of Degri College, Wilson Tapna and Pitrus Kandulana, secretary & president of Birsa Munda celebration committee.

Speaking on the occasion, Ranjit Kujur said, “Birsa Munda was a hero who had majorly contributed to the freedom struggle against the British Raj. Known as the tribal freedom fighter, Birsa Munda belonged to the Munda tribe. He was a religious leader who is known to be an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement.

He is remembered as a hero who managed to achieve a lot at a very young age of 25 and left a strong mark in the Indian history after the protest against British rule in India.” A day long program was organized, where many ideologies of Birsa were discussed and a cultural programme was also performed and the programme was attended by many local and renowned persons.
