DEMOW: Under the patronage of All Tai Ahom Demow Regional (ATASU), Demow Regional Committee, and in association with the people of Demow, on Thursday the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Divas was observed in Demow public playground on Thursday.
The programme started with cutting of the red ribbon of the programme which was jointly done by Kulendu Hujuri, OC of Demow Police Station, and Ajay Kumar Gogoi, Assistant Professor of Moran Women College, on Thursday evening. In the programme, tributes were paid to Jayanta Handique, an ATASU leader who died in an accident recently. Sumeet Kumar Handique, secretary of ATASU, Sivasagar subdivision committee, anchored in the programme. Shekhar Jyoti Dowari, president of the organizing committee of Lachit Divas, and the Tai pandits lit the earthen lamps in front of the photo of Lachit Barphukan in Demow Public Playground.
LAKHIMPUR: The 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan, the hero of the Battle of Saraighat, was celebrated in a befitting manner across the Lakhimpur district on Thursday. In addition to the district administration, various social organizations, academic institutions of the district commemorated the epoch-maker of the State by organizing programmes of their own to disseminate his ideology in the grassroots level of the society.
In this connection, Lakhimpur district administration centrally organized the celebration programme at District Library auditorium. The agenda of the programme kick-started with the presentation of Asom Sangeet. Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan lit the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of Lachit Barphukan and paid floral tribute to him. While speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner commemorated the patriot by throwing light on his life and noble works. History Professor of Lakhimpur Girls' College, Dr Jayantajit Bordoloi took part in the event as appointed speaker. He said that the Battle of Saraighat and efficiency, valour and patriotism of Lachit Borphukan scripted golden chapter in the history of Assam by establishing the unique existence of the Assamese community in the vast Indian subcontinent of that time. On the other hand, District Development Commissioner Manoj Kumar Baruah delivered his lecture by laying stress on Lachit Barphukan's perseverance, disciplinarian and punctual attitude, indomitable will-power showed in a critical period of Assam
In the same programme, prizes were distributed among the winners of the various competitions organized by the district administration in connection with the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan. As per results, Prerona Baruah of St. Mary's High School secured first prize in the essay writing competition, while Dimpi Saikia of Pragyan Jyoti Academy (Narayanpur) and Deeptanshu Jyoti Dutta of St. Mary's High School secured the second and third prizes. On the other hand, Lipika Saikia of Government HS School, Dhrubajyoti Saikia of Kachua Model Public School, Maina Saikia of Dimaruguri ME School, Nirmit Saikia of Na-Pamua LP School, Milan Lamset of Assam Blind Children's School grabbed prizes in the essay-writing competition organized by the Education Department in the district.
The programme was held under the management of Junuma Koch. The students of the Akankhya Kala Kendra performed colourful cultural items with patriotic fervour in the programme. Artistes of Abhigyan Gosthi staged a drama titled Deshotkoi Momai Dangor Nohoy.
