Guwahati: The driver of the vehicle which turned turtle in Assam's Biswanath district following which five Bihu artists lost their lives, surrendered on Monday.

As per reports, the driver identified as Abhijit Gogoi surrendered at the Amguri police station in the Sivasagar district.

The said police have now taken him into custody.

At least five Bihu artists lost their lives in a road accident on Saturday night which took place on national highway 15 as the driver lost control over the vehicle and it overturned.

Of 20, who were returning from Rangajan in Gohpur after performing Husori, five people were killed on the spot.

Survivors accused the driver of being under the influence of alcohol while driving and misjudged a turning as he was overspeeding resulting in the vehicle turning over.

The injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital, while those who received severe injuries, were shifted to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) for better treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, condoled the death of five members of a Bihu husori group who died on Saturday night in a road accident.

"I am saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Biswanath district of Assam. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest: PM @narendramodi", Modi tweeted.
