Tezpur : BJP Candidate Rajen Borthakur won in the Assembly by-election from 74 Rangapara Constituency in Sonitpur district by a record margin of 49,599 votes against Congress candidate Karthik Kurmi. Rajen Borthakur secured 78,301 votes while Karthik Kurmi secured 28,702 votes in the Rangapara Assembly Constituency.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Royal Soreng came third with 5,901 votes. Bharatiya Gana Parishad candidate Arup Kumar Chowdhury came fourth and got only 2,022 votes and another SUCI (Communist) candidate Sanjit Rajbanshi came last and got 997 votes. There were 2136 NOTA voters. The turnout of voters in the bypoll was 74.31 per cent. Total numbers of electors were 155267 and valid votes were 115923.
