Blanket Containment Zones in Assam

GUWAHATI:

Due to the worsening of the COVID-19 situation, the Assam government has declared blanket containment zones in three districts and a sub-division for a week to better deal with the situation.  The COVID-19 blanket containment zones have been announced across the whole districts of Biswanath, Morigaon, and Goalpara, according to the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) enforced by the state government today.

The COVID-19 containment zone rules have also been applied to the Bokakhat sub-division. According to the new SOP, which went into effect today, all shops and commercial enterprises in these districts will stay closed except for grocery stores.

Similarly, only emergency vehicles are permitted to operate.  The grocery stores will be open from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day for a week. Meanwhile, the government has tightened the laws and regulations in these four districts and sub-divisions even more.

The movement curfew has been shortened from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Kamrup (M), South Salmara, Majuli, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Charaideo, and Hailakandi, according to the SOP published on Saturday.

Shops will be open until 4 p.m. in districts that are open until 5 p.m., and until 1 p.m. in districts where the curfew begins at 2 p.m.

These orders will be in effect beginning at 5 a.m. on June 28 (Monday) and will remain in effect until additional orders are issued.

Notably, the Assam state government has identified 220 COVID-19 hotspots in these districts in order to curb the spread of the deadly infectious disease. The COVID-19 positivity rate in Golaghat and Biswanath districts is the highest among these districts. Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Baxa, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Kamrup(R), Sivasagar, and Dhemaji are among the other districts where the pandemic situation remains critical.

"Till now, we have not considered taking resort of lockdown in these districts. We are deciding to declare containment zones in these hotspots,' stated Keshab Mahanta, Assam's Health Minister.
