GORESWAR: A block-level awareness meet on Swachhata Hi Sewa under Swachh Bharat Mission was held at the premises of Tamulpur Durga Puja Mandir on Wednesday. The awareness meeting was presided over by Assistant Commissioner Hriday Kumar Das while the aims and objectives of the meeting was explained by Niranjan Deka, BRCC of the Public Health Engineering Department, who said that creating awareness about plastic waste and management was the main aim and objective of the awareness meet.
Addressing the awareness programme, BM Roy, Executive Engineer of Baksa division of PHE Department, said that billions and billions of plastic waste were choking oceans, lakes and rivers and pilling up on land, which was harmful to plants and wildlife. He discussed easy ways to reduce use of single use plastic and spoke about eco- friendly alternatives.
Samiran Baruah, SDO Tamulpur Subdivision (PHE), Sanchuma Basumatary, Block Development Officer, and other officers said that plastic waste should be collected from various parts of the district and should be safely disposed through recycling. “We must avoid single use plastic to save environment,” they said.
A cleanliness drive was also conducted after the awareness meeting at Tamulpur weekly market. Samiran Baruah, SDO of Tamulpur Subdivision (PHE), set a good example by using plates made from tree leaves at lunch time. He also urged people to use plates made from tree leaves during family functions and festivals.
