Kokrajhar: Bodoland Students’ Union (BSU) on Friday demanded the government of Assam and State Election Commission to hold the 4th BTC general election on scheduled time, that is, on April 4.

Talking to reporters in a press meet at its office, Kokrajhar, the president of the BSU Swgwmsar Basumatary said the State Election Commission has already declared the date of BTC election, date of repoll, counting etc and all process for submission of nomination papers and scrutiny is over. The campaigning of election by different political parties are going on in full swing while training for presiding and polling officials are going on, he said adding that there had been apprehension of deferment of BTC election due to outbreak of Coronavirus in different parts of India.

Basumatary said the student body was not in favour of deferring BTC election but wants to be held on time. He said so far no person had been detected positive in Assam and one cannot rule out the possibility of spread of the dreaded virus late by April and therefore, the government of Assam and State Election Commission should ensure holding of council election on time. He also said the government should issue strict instructions to the political party leaders not to hold public gatherings or campaign meetings.

BSU president said the term of the present Executive Council will come to an end and in this circumstance there will be a hung government to run the council. Replying to queries, he said during the time of casting of vote, the voters should maintain the minimum gap in the queue as per directives or if necessary, there should be alternative mechanism for voters to cast their votes.
