In a further boost to medical facilities in Barak Valley, Assam health and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone of a 500 bed emergency hospital wing today.
As per reports, the emergency wing will be built at an expense of Rs 90 crore.
While inaugurating the ICU, several other medical infrastructure worth Rs 44 cr will also come up at SMCH.
Earlier on Wednesday, the minister had said that 40 more Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds will be added to the Silchar Medical Collge.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sarma also announced that it would be upgraded to 100 beds by December 31 in 2020.
The new additions are expected to increase the facilities at the SMCH's and give a fillip to the hospital's ongoing fight against the dreaded coronavirus which has already claimed more than 600 lives across Assam.
In a tweet, Sarma wrote "Another step taken towards upgrading medical facilities in Silchar~ Laid the foundation stone of a 500-bed emergency hospital wing worth Rs 90 cr & various other medical infrastructure worth Rs 44 cr at SMCH today. It shall further strengthen health care in the area,"
