Guwahati: If you think the drama of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections is over, you are wrong. While the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) President Pramod Boro sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) on Tuesday, the opposition party, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) said that the members of the party would not resign from the council, and the public mandate was with them. BPF emerged as the single largest party in BTC elections by winning 17 seats out of the 40-seat elections. BPF, led by Hangrama Mohilary was ruling the BTC since its inception in the year 2003. Even after winning 17 seats, the party won't form the council.
UPPL won 12 seats, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won nine seats. Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), on the other hand, won one seat. UPPL, BJP and GSP came together to form the fourth council in Bodoland.
Following the formation of the new council by BJP, UPPL, and GSP, the senior leaders of BPF have said that they will challenge this council formation in the court. They called this as "undemocratic."
A senior BPF leader, who is also a minister in Assam cabinet, Pramila Rani Brahma said that they will not resign. They were the single largest party in the recently held elections, however, the Governor did not invite them to form the council.
The BTC elections were held on December 7 and 10. The votes were counted on December 12. The elections took place in four Bodoland districts, they are Chirang, Kokrajhar, Udalguri and Baksa. The new council of Bodoland was formed on December 15, with five new members swearing-in at the oath-taking ceremony in Kokrajhar.
The BTC elections have become a precursor for the upcoming Assembly Elections of Assam in 2021.
