KOKRAJHAR: The Bodoland People's Front (BPF) women wing on Monday took out a rally in Kokrajhar town to put pressure to hold the general election to Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) at the earliest.

Around 100 women members of the party participated in the rally which started from BPF party central office situated at Jwhwlao Dwimalu Road through the streets of Kokrajhar to the Deputy Commissioner's office.

A memorandum was submitted to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam State Election Commissioner through the Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar with the demand to hold BTC election within October and to stop further extension of Governor's Rule in BTC.

The president of Kokrajhar district women's wing of BPF, Uma Chetri said the Government of Assam had 'murdered' democracy in BTC. She said that election was being held in other States despite COVID-19 pandemic but the Government of Assam was delaying the BTC election under the pretext of the pandemic. She said there was no valid reason to halt BTC election in the name of the pandemic when markets, malls and hotels had been opened and train services would also resume soon. She added that election could be held in BTC by following guidelines of social distancing and using masks.

Meanwhile, the Nikhil Hindi Bhasi Parishad also submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Kokrajhar DC on Monday demanding early election to BTC. The secretary of the Parishad, Dilip Shetia said the assembly election in Bihar would be held from October 28 and panchayat elections in Rajasthan got underway from Monday and therefore, there was no reason not to hold the BTC election.

On the other hand, the North East Minority Students' Union (NEMSU) also submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar demanding early election to BTC and inclusion of a member of the minority community in the recently formed Commission of BTR.
