Braille version of ‘Hemkosh’ presented to Tezpur University

TEZPUR: Hemkosh Prakashan and Sadin Pratidin Group, led by Rubi Baruah (wife of Jayanta Baruah, Editor, Asomiya Pratidin & MD, Pratidin Group of Publications,) & Smitakshi B Goswami, Managing Editor, Pratidin Time on Tuesday presented the Braille version of ‘Hemkosh’ to Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University. On behalf of Hemkosh Prakashan, the Braille version of ‘Hemkosh’ was formally handed over to Prof. Singh by Rubi Baruah.

The event which was organized at Dept. of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ), included the launching of the book ‘Gender Divide and Women Empowerment in the Digital Age’ by Dr. Kapou Malakar, Assistant Professor of Department of MCJ, Tezpur University.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Abhijit Bora, Head, Dept. of MCJ. He congratulated Jayanta Baruah, the proprietor of Hemkosh Prakashan and a renowned media entrepreneur of Assam, for his initiative in creating a Braille version of Hemkosh. He also congratulated Dr. Kapou Malakar on the launch of her book, offering words of encouragement for future academic endeavours.

Speaking on the occasion, Smitakshi Baruah Goswami said that the Braille version is expected to give a new dimension to Assamese language with an aim to help in improving the educational quality of visually impaired children in the State.

Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University congratulated Baruah family for the unique work and said, “Hemkosh” is considered to be one of the most comprehensive and authoritative dictionaries of the Assamese language. He stressed the need for industry-academia collaboration in the field of journalism and welcomed the idea of collaboration between the Pratidin Group and Tezpur University. He also congratulated Dr. Kapou Malakar for her book. He said that the book emphasizes the need and importance of universal access to ICT and digital technologies in light of the existing digital divide in India.

Among other distinguished guests who attended the event were Sushanta Talukdar, noted journalist and founder editor of NEZINE.com, Ratna Bharali Talukdar, a freelance journalist and litterateur, Prakash Mahanta, Associate Editor of Axomiya Pratidin, Prof. Farheena Danta, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tezpur University and faculty and staff members of the University.
