GUWAHATI:

On Saturday, National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jagat Prakash Nadda designated Rangia MLA Bhabesh Kalita as the next Assam BJP State President. The nominations were accepted by party president JP Nadda, according to a statement issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh on Saturday. Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass will be replaced as Assam BJP President by Bhabesh Kalita, the 49-year-old Rangia MLA.

"Congratulations to @Bhabesh_KalitaR on being appointed as @BJP4Assam State President. His dedication towards development of Assam is exemplary. Wish him very best. Under his able leadership, #BJP will reach new heights in #Assam," tweeted Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Ranjit Kumar Dass had been serving as the Assam BJP President since the year 30th of June, 2017. Dass (54) was appointed Minister of Panchayat & Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Food & Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs in Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's cabinet. He is a member of the Patacharkuchi assembly constituency.

"Congratulations to Shri @Bhabesh_KalitaR for being elected as the new President of @BJP4Assam. As a friend & a colleague, I have known him for quite some time now. The ideals & the principles of BJP in Assam needs exactly a leader like you to lead us to even greater success," Ranjit Kumar Dass tweeted to congratulate his new successor on taking the BJP's responsibility in the state of Assam.

The appointment of Bhabesh Kalita comes at a critical juncture, with unverified rumours indicating a probable Union cabinet reshuffle. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened a meeting of the Council of Ministers on June 30 to discuss a variety of matters, including the cabinet reshuffle.
