Guwahati: The much-awaited dates for the Bodoland Territorial Council Elections 2020 were announced on Tuesday. The elections will be held in two- phases on December 7 and 10.

In the first phase, elections would be held in constituencies in Udalguri and Baksa districts on December 7. If any need for re-poll arises, it will be held on December 8.

Voting will take place in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts in the second phase on December 10, Re-poll, if required would be held on December 11.

The timing for voting is from 7.30 AM to 4.30 PM.

The dates were announced by the state election commissioner, Alok Kumar.

The date of counting the votes for both the phases is December 12, counting would begin from 8 AM.

The BTC elections will be held for the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts. The districts are Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri. The elections were previously scheduled for April 14, 2020. But it had to be postponed due to the global pandemic, followed by the nationwide lockdown. The council is currently under the rule of the Governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi.

The BTC elections would be seen as a pre-cursor to the Assam Assembly polls to be held next year.

BJP leader Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has been addressing various meetings in Bodoland. He has earlier said that BJP plans to form the government in Bodoland. Earlier last week, Sarma addressed a public meeting in Fakiragram, Kokrajhar and said that BJP is determined to bring peace and prosperity in Bodoland. He also said that the party will further protect the rights of Bodoland. BJP will contest all the 12 seats and will win all of them, said Sarma.

Hagrama Mohillary of Bodoland People's Front (BPF) too has been exuding confidence of sweeping the BTC polls.

Promod Boro of UPPL would be another key player in the upcoming polls.
