Guwahati: The indigenous people of Assam residing in Pune in association with ‘LUIT- The Assamese Society in Pune’ strongly oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act-2019 that the government has “imposed”, without considering the sentiments of the people and the harmony of the multi-communal state of Assam.
In a press statement, the members of the Assamese Society in Pune stated that this act directly endangers the culture of Assam as the inclusion of the immigrants, irrespective of their religion, under the Citizenship Amendment Act will lead to erosion of ethnic, cultural, the linguistic identity of indigenous Assamese people.
It’s important for the national and international community to understand who these protesters are in Assam. Assamese people are not communal. They are not protesting against Muslims or Hindus. They don’t discriminate between Hindu or Muslim infiltrators. This is the crux of the whole movement, the press statement said.
"We, the Assamese people want all illegal infiltrators out of the state," said one of the members of the Assamese Society in Pune.
They also mentioned that CAA makes a mockery out of Assam Accord and nullifies the Assam Agitation (1979-85), an honorary movement for Assam in which 855 people sacrificed their lives in the hope of an Infiltration Free Assam.
Looking at the present situation in Assam, the Assamese Society residing in Pune has joined our hands to stage a protest in solidarity with the brothers, sisters and families back in Assam, who are suffering under indefinite curfew, internet ban, police and force brutality and leading a life of fear, uncertainty and trauma.
