Cachar administration arranges shelter camps for refugees from Manipur

SILCHAR: In the back drop of violence-struck Manipur, refugees from the neighbouring district of Jiribam have sought shelter in Cachar. Following which Cachar Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha met the media persons at a press conference at Lakhipur Sub division office on Friday and briefed media about the facilities being provided to the people from Jiribam, Manipur by the Cachar administration.

DC Rohan Kumar Jha informed the reporters that approximately 1,100 people from Manipur have come to Cachar via waterway (Jiri river) and a few of them by road because of fear due to the ongoing violence in that State. Different schools in Lakhipur sub-division including Jorkha Hmar lower primary school, Mirpur lower primary school, Fulertal union high school, and public places in villages like Rangmaijan, K. Bethel, Lalpani have been used to accomodate them, he said.

He said ration for two days has been provided in the accomodation places as of now and more ration will be provided as needed. The situation along the border area is peaceful, he added and appealed to the general public not to fall prey or spread any rumours related to the unrest in neighbouring Manipur.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatto also told the reporters that security has been beefed up in neighbouring areas of Cachar- Manipur border and all measures have been taken to maintain the peace and tranquility in that area, he also affirmed that Lakhipur/Cachar is not affected in any way because of the violence in Manipur.

It is pertinent to mention that Cachar, which is one of the three districts in Barak Valley, shares borders with Manipur’s Jiribam district. The inter-district border (Jirighat-Jiribam point) is around 45km from Silchar town, stated a press release.
