SILCHAR: Prof Siddharth Sankar Nath, principal of Cachar College had been arrested after Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha lodged an FIR alleging gross negligence in conducting the recruitment examination for 3rd and 4th grade posts on Sunday as well as misbehaving with government officials. Confirming the news, SP Ramandeep Kaur said, they would now interrogate Nath and the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
On Sunday, more than 75 thousand aspirants from three districts of Barak Valley appeared in the examination held in 118 centres. With over 1200 candidates, Cachar College is the third busiest centre in Silchar after NIT and GC College.
The problem started when no representative from Cachar College turned up at due time on Sunday morning to collect the question papers. Even the gates of the college were reportedly not opened on time. Sources said, Jha called up Nath to ask what went wrong but he was reportedly asked by the Principal to oil his own machine. Nath further reminded the Deputy Commissioner that he was the principal of the college and Jha should talk to his juniors. Later Swadesh Ranjan Das, a teacher of Philosophy at Cachar College who was in charge of Sunday's examination, went to the strong room to collect the question papers. Das too reportedly misbehaved with the Deputy Commissioner when the latter asked him why the College authority was so callous. Sources said, Jha then slapped Das and asked the police personnel to detain him. Das was reportedly made to kneel down by Jha. Questions sheets were however dispatched to Cachar College in time. Jha had denied slapping Das but admitted that he did shout at him. Jha then lodged an FIR with Silchar Sadar thana and accordingly police picked up Nath from his residence and later he was arrested.
