Silchar: Though the dreaded COVID-19 has claimed the life of a 68-year-old man in Hailakandi district of Barak Valley and the only death so far in the entire north east by the virus, the government of Assam has taken all precautions and left nothing to chances. Each and every segment of the population is being taken care of by the local administration which is being closely monitored by Dispur. The Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Barnali Sharma held a conclave with the managements of various tea estates in her conference hall on Saturday.

While briefing the managements about the lockdown, she said its continuation as hinted by New Delhi till April end would no doubt create more hardship and difficulties, particularly for the tea workers. All this has to be sustained in best public interest, society and the nation. This is to contain spread of the disease, Barnali Sharma pointed out. The government is taking necessary measures for resumption of operations in the tea gardens without compromising with the guidelines.

The Deputy Commissioner said gardens can resume works with maximum 50 workers on roster basis and labourers shall not be allowed to move out of the estates. Workers and staff should invariably wear masks and hand gloves while at work in gardens. The trailer or the lorry should carry two to three workers and maintain social distancing. Bought tea leaves from other gardens should be sanitized at the entry point of the garden. Hospitals and factories are to be subjected to sanitization. The Deputy Commissioner told the managements about proper sanitization of labour quarters. Workers and their family members released from quarantine should not be engaged in works without obtaining clearance from the district administration. Barnali Sharma said labourers have to be provided essential commodities as mandated. The meeting was also attended by Jesica Lalsim, District Development Commissioner, Sumit Sattawan, Assistant Commissioner, Abhilash Barnawal and Rupali Pegu. Assistant Labour Commissioner.
