LAKHIMPUR: A capacity-building training programme was held for the farmers engaged in the Model Millet Project of the Lakhimpur district on Tuesday.

With a view to enshrine the International Year of Millets, the Model Millet Project for production and promotion of the millets was launched in Narayanpur Block under the district on March 2 of the current year under the auspices of NABARD and APRINS organization. The project covers an area of 150 bighas with participation of a total of 50 farmers. The project has resulted in the revival of the traditional food crop in the district, with blooming millet fields at Rangajan No.2, Letepukhuri, Narayanpur. The project consists of various components, including awareness and capacity building of farmers regarding millet cultivation and benefits of the superfood, exposure visit of farmers, value addition and marketing. The farmers have been engaged in the project under the guidance of the District Development Manager, NABARD, Lakhimpur, RARS Lakhimpur and Department of Agriculture.

In the capacity building and training programme, Dr Yater Das of RARS, Lakhimpur participated as the resource person. She demonstrated the farmers regarding strategies to be adopted in order to ensure proper growth of the crop and adopting appropriate plant protection measures at the right time. She expressed her pleasure on seeing the beautiful growth of the millets (foxtail variety) in the fields and encouraged the farmers to make the project a successful one.
