JORHAT: ATMs, numbering above 200 in the districts of Jorhat and Golaghat, are in high demand as people are shopping for Durga Puja. Currency handling agencies like FIS Prosegur, Writers Safe-Guard and CMS are responsible for refilling the ATMs and Wednesday, they have re-filled the ATMs four to five times a day.
“After every two to four hours we get instruction through our system to reach a particular ATM for refilling and since the past four days we have not even got the time to have lunch or breakfast. A total of 26 vehicles with armed guards are on duty since 10 am to 6 pm,” said sources in the currency handling agencies.
State Bank of India regional office sources said that this Puja season there had been a high demand for money transaction through ATMs, something that was not witnessed even during Bohag Bihu or Durga Puja in the past years.
Customers of nationalized banks have complained about less number of ATMs in areas like Teok, Mariani, Titabor and Dergaon. “As the number of bank customers is increasing in these areas, there should be at least 6-10 ATMs in such areas,” said Rajen Bora, the president of All Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association while talking to this correspondent.
