Chairman of National Commission M Venkatesan holds meeting with safai karmacharis

LAKHIMPUR: M Venkatesan, the chairman of National Commission for safai karmacharis, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to the State of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, visited Lakhimpur district on Monday. During his visit, the chairman held a crucial meeting with the safai karmacharis of the district in the conference hall of the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) office. The meeting was held under the management of NLMB Executive Officer Casio Karan Pegu.

Chairman M Venkatesan delivered his lecture in the meeting in his mother tongue Tamil and it was translated to Hindi by social activist RN Prashad, the member of the State Monitoring Committee for the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 (MS Act, 2013).

In the meeting, the chairman took stock of the manifold problems of the safai karmacharis and assured them to solve their problems very soon. Prior to holding the meeting, the chairman inspected the Horizon Colony, located at Ward No. 13 of North Lakhimpur town and interacted with the dwellers. They apprised him of their problems regarding the shortage of their adequate residences, pure drinking water and adequate sanitary toilets. In this regard, the chairman instructed Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan and NLMB Executive Officer Casio Karan Pegu to resolve the problems concerned at the earliest. He also instructed them to ensure the life insurance policies, ESI Cards, Provident Funds to the safai karmacharis working in the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, NLMB and other government departments in the district.
