Chief Minister urges people to publicize works of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma at Udalguri

UDALGURI: The State government has conferred the Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma award to exponent of Xattriya culture Harekrishna Mahanta, who is also the Xatradhikar of Barangajuli Xatra, Dimakuchi. The award consists of Rs 3,00,000 and a citation.

The award ceremony was organized at Udalguri DC playground by the Cultural Directorate with the cooperation of Udalguri district administration. The welcome address was delivered by Bornali Sarmah, the Director of Culture. Owing to the great contributions of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma to the Bodo society, she expressed happiness at the selection of Harekrishna Mahanta for the award.

While addressing the meeting, Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma urged the State Government to look into the Bathou religious group too. Commemorating the great contributions of Kalicharan Brahma, she thanked the Chief Minister for taking strong initiatives to popularize the great reformer among the common masses. She also greeted Harekrishna Mahanta for his great contribution to develop Bodo community.

State PHE Minister Rihon Daimary and also the local legislator expressed his gratitude to the State Government for providing the great opportunity to commemorate the noble works of two great personalities by organizing the function at Udalguri. Harekrishna, the Borongajuli Xatradhikar, revealed how he delved into the tribal society for social reform. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the people to publicize the great works of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma among the students and common people. He also greeted Harekrishna Mahanta for his noble works for the society. Sonowal also felicitated S K Sunni, renowned Bodo musician, Surendranath Brahma, Chandrakanta Basumatary, environmentalist, Ratan Boro, shooter, Rabiram Brahma, renowned artist, dramatist Mathura Basumatari, folk artist Banwfar Narzari, Dr. Birhasgiri Basumatari, farmer Tenzing Bodosha, shooter Pramila Daimari, footballer Kameswar Basumatari, Lebcharan Boro, Abinash Daimari, litterateur Dhiren Boro Narzy and Dharmeswar Rabha for excellence in their respective fields.

Thousands of people thronged the award ceremony to laud the great contribution of Harekrishna Mahanta even at the age of 95. Mahanta was born in 1926 in Barpeta. He joined the xatra at the age of 10 and continue the legacy of Srimanta Sankardeva. He has set up schools to educate people and xatras to reform the tribal people
