Child marriage: Congress MLA Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha lambasts police action

SILCHAR: Lambasting the police drive against the perpetrators of child marriage act as 'insensitive and inhuman', the Congress MLA Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha raised question on the status of the offsprings of the perpetrators who had been arrested for marrying girls below 18 years. Government should take the responsibility of the families of the arrested persons otherwise the wives and the children would be left with no means to survive, he further said. Purkayastha, who is also the APCC working president, made it clear that the Congress was also against the practice of child marriage. He termed it as 'social evil'. "It should be dealt with social mechanism. But police action against the poor and uneducated families would aggravate further the miseries for them," he added.
