NALBARI: A victim of inhumane child marriage under Mukalmua Police Station was rescued in Coimbatore railway station in Tamil Nadu recently. According to sources, the girl was married by an elderly married person and she was taken to Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu Police caught this couple at Coimbatore railway station in suspicion. She was kept in children home there. Later she was brought home under smooth and quick response of District Unit of Children Protection, Nalbari and CWC. "Now she has been sent to her home," OC of Mukalmua Police station confirmed. But the convict was not yet arrested.
"Mukalmua, Ghagrapar, and some areas of Tihu and the vast char areas of Nalbari such as Kurhiamari, Bhagnamari, Sialmari, Bebiparakhat, Bhurighat etc. have become pockets of child marriage," sources said. According to our sources these areas have witnessed many child marriages recently. The guardians of the victims keep the marriages secretly and most child marriages are going unreported. "Most marriages are kept secret and solemnized at night," Mamrez Ali, the president of Kurihamari Barsulia Anchalik AAMSU said. Many cases are still unreported in those areas.
On August 21, District Unit of Children Protection, Nalbari and CWC arranged an awareness visit under Sialmari Char Police Station. The team visited many accused homes and consulted with the victims. Our sources claim that in many cases the family of the victims illegally abort the child and decline those marriages. Concerned residents of those areas seek quick intervention of the administration.
