KOKRAJHAR/BONGAIGAON: To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated by the district administration of Chirang in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office here at Kajalgaon on Friday.
The programme started with offering floral tributes to the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi by Gautam Talukdar, Deputy Commissioner of Chirang, officials of district administration and health workers of the district.
In this connection, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Gautam Talukdar where in his opening remarks, Talukdar explained the significance of the day, including the importance of paying tribute to the Father of the Nation for his courageous deeds during the struggle for Independence for the country from British rule. "He was the pioneer of truth and non-violence and also instrumental in abolishing the age-old practice of untouchability in India," he added. He hailed the works of the safai karmacharis of the district who were rendering services during this pandemic situation.
A speech on Gandhi's contribution towards the freedom of India was also delivered by Dr. Anosh Narzary, Assistant Professor, Bengtal College, who was the resource person during the programme.
On the occasion, as many as 28 safai karmacharis engaged in different hospitals, COVID Care Centres and quarantine centres in the district were felicitated with Aronai by Deputy Commissioner Gautam Talukdar for their selfless services during this pandemic situation. Additional Deputy Commissioners Karmadev Brahma and Ringkhang Mushahary, Election Officer Partha Pratim Baruah, Joint Director, Health Services Dr. Ratul Chandra Bordoloi and other dignitaries of the district administration were also present in the programme.
