LAKHIMPUR: Demanding immediate granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Chutiya community and formation of autonomous council for the community, the Lakhimpur district unit of Chutiya Students' Union burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and WPT&BC Minister Chandan Brahma on Tuesday.

Led by district unit president Jayanta Hazarika and general secretary Amrit Das, the activists of the organization staged the agitation programme at Court Tiniali of North Lakhimpur. The protesters rocked the environment by shouting various slogans in support of their demands. They expressed vehement resentment against the BJP-led State and Union governments for their 'lackadaisical' attitude towards granting ST status to the community concerned and for the formation of the autonomous council for its welfare.

"We demand the BJP-led governments to grant ST status to our community and to form separate autonomous council before the assembly election to be held in 2021. Otherwise, our organization will intensify our stir to achieve our judicious right. Unless our demands are fulfilled, we will oppose the BJP strongly and a befitting reply will be given to the party in the assembly election," declared Jayanta Hazarika in the protest programme wherein Chutiya Students' Union central committee vice-presidents Raju Chutiya and Madhav Borah also became vocal regarding the issues.
