Citizens Rights Preservation Comittee casts doubt on ULFA pact

SILCHAR : Reacting sharply to the claims made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on political and constitutional safeguard for the ‘Khilonjia Asomiya’ through the delimitation as well as by the recent pact with the pro-talk faction of the ULFA, the Citizens Rights Preservation Comittee (CRPC) said, as the definition of Asomiya was yet to be arrived at, there remained total uncertainty over their so-called safeguard. Sadhan Purkayastha, secretary general of CRPC, a forum fighting for the rights of both the linguistic as well as religious minorities, said, the claims made by the Chief Minister was nothing but a political gimmick. Addressing a press meet, Purkayastha and Kishore Bhattacharya said, though the CRPC welcomed the ULFA pact, but they were suspicious about its ultimate result. “We are not sure whether this pact will be able to bring permanent peace in the state or it will boomerang and destroy the social fabric of the society,” the CRPC leaders said. They further added, the government should ensure that while protecting the future of one community should not result into the discrimination to the other. “The Chief Minister has said that those who have been residing in the state are Assamese and 80 per cent of the Assembly seats will be reserved for them. But is it permissible under our constitution?” Purkayastha asked.
