GUWAHATI:
The office of the commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Committee (GMC) today in a notification announced that they have initiated a cleanliness drive under the Swatch Bharat Abhigyan.
Today, a Safai Abhiyan (Cleanliness Drive) under Swatch Bharat Abhiyan initiative was organised by GMC in collaboration with Kamakhya Devalaya Management Committee and NDRF around the periphery of the historic Nilachal Hill.
The cleanliness drive was inaugrated in presence of GMC officials including the commissioner, additional commissioner, joint commissioners I and II, chief engineer, engineers and other staff.
One inspector along with 25 personnel from NDRF as well as the officials of the Kamakhya Devalaya Management Committee also attended the inaugural meeting and joined the cleanliness drive.
The drive covered several locations of the Nilachar Hill including the premises of the Kamakhya Temple and the greater area of the Bhubaneswari Temple.
The central government has undertaken a project to construct a new road in the Nilachal Hill in Guwahati. A new road to one of the country's most revered Shaktipeeths is nearly complete. It meanders through the Nilachal Hills, parallel to the great Brahmaputra, and provides a scenic view of the mysterious Kamakhya temple and the crimson river. The additional road is being built with the large throngs that attend the temple in Assam during the yearly festival of Ambubachi Mela in mind. The road, which was built at a budget of Rs 14 crore, is a much-needed access to the temple, since the old one becomes nearly choked during the festival, when more than 15-20 lakh worshippers arrive.
