CM Conrad Sangma inaugurated 21st edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav in Shillong

Guwahati: The 21st edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM), which was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma at Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong on February 4, is currently on at Meghalaya’s State Capital. Organized by the National School of Drama (NSD), the prestigious annual theatre festival has come to Meghalaya for the first time with an assortment of plays.

Besides Shillong, the festival is being parallelled across four other cities – Delhi, Dehradun, Nagpur and Puducherry.

Like each year, this year too BRM has brought a rich bouquet of plays depicting various shades of emotions. Altogether seven plays will be staged on the occasion that includes a combination of theatres by Indian and international thespians.

The inaugural function of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2020 kick-started at Soso Tham Auditorium with a Khasi group’s enthralling performance. The dignitaries present on the occasion included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as chief guest and Meghalaya’s Art & Culture Commissioner & Secretary Fredrick Roy Kharkongor as special guest. The function was presided over by Prof Suresh Sharma, Director in-charge, NSD.

BRM 2020 at Shillong will conclude on February 10. Earlier, the festival at Shillong began on February 4 with Probin Sakia’s ballad Jona Gabhoru, which is a tale of a young hero who goes out in quest of fortune and wins a princess. In the kingdom of Garuchar ruled Jona Gabhoru, a woman who had already put nine hundred princes in prison. She had made an announcement that whoever succeeds in three tests set by her would secure her hand, otherwise he would be imprisoned. Kalidhan of Kamrup heard and set out to marry her but he failed. Miserable Kalidhan called his friend Gopichan of Nagaon and requested him to find Jona, who sets out on the quest for Jona, stated a press release.
