SIVASAGAR: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday attended the platinum jubilee celebration of Sibsagar College and urged the college authorities to take up appropriate programmes and tie-up with national-level coaching centres to train students of the institution for NEET, JEE, UPSC, APSC and other important competitive examinations.

While assuring the college authorities to extend all needful support for this purpose, the Chief Minister stressed the need to identify the causes of poor performance of the students and youth of the State at national level examinations. He said that there was a need to objectively examine the teaching pattern and flaws in the system and adopt remedial measures.

Coinciding with the celebration, the Chief Minister unveiled busts of the founding principal of the college Padmadhar Chaliha and one of the main architects of the college Parag Chaliha.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma appreciated the role of Sibsagar College in grooming quality human resources and enriching the society academically during the last 75 years. He said that the college should prepare a roadmap for next 75 years in sync with the emergent changes.

Stating that the new National Education Policy gives major thrust on building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Chief Minister emphasized on elaborate discussion on the salient features of the policy within the college campus. Dr. Sarma also announced financial assistance of Rs. 5 crore for strengthening infrastructure of the college. He further asked Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu to initiate necessary process for upgrading the college to university level in consultation with the college fraternity.

Chief Minister Sarma also laid the foundation stone of an open stage in memory of Professor Sarat Mahanta in the programme, besides releasing a collection of poems written by Sabyasachi Mahanta and Ritamoni Bora.

Minister of Education Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Revenue & Disaster Management Jogen Mohan, MPs Topon Kumar Gogoi and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and others were present in the programme, stated a press release.
