SILCHAR: Drive against child marriage seemed to yield results in Cachar as till now 84 persons including 7 women were arrested. However, out of these 84, altogether 62 were granted bail and rest 22 were now in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the Cachar district administration for its drive. In a message on his Twitter handle, Sarma said, “Cachar has begun this process, and the team has identified 10 child marriage pockets. Bal Panchayats have been held in Notun Ramnagar GP under Sonai Block; Buribail GP under Salchapra Block; Panibhora GP under Narshingpur Block. Attended by all senior officials of district.”

Sarma further said, “ We are supplementing efforts of Assam Police with decisive and strategic interventions by Deputy Commissioners of all the districts. All have been advised to identify vulnerable pockets, which is followed by holding of Bal Panchayat to sensitize and aware people. This is yielding good results.”

State police began the drive on February 3. In the very first day, Cachar police picked up 72 persons. A source in the administration said highest number of child marriages was reported in Sonai, a muslim-dominated constituency while lowest number was in Udharbond. 22 persons were arrested in Sonai, 16 in Dholai, 12 in Silchar, 8 in Barkhola, 6 in Kalain while in Udharbond only a single arrest was made.
