GUWAHATI: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has congratulated table tennis player Bhavinaben Patel on her grand achievement at the Olympic games. She has bagged a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Bhavinaben, who hails from Mehsana, Gujarat, finished her journey with a silver medal at her first Paralympic games after getting trounced (0-3) by the world's number paddler Ying Zhou of China in the women's singles category in the final in Tokyo on Sunday. Her splendid performance at the games concluded in a 7-11, 5-11, 6-11defeat against a two-time gold medalist Zhou in the women's singles category. The duration of the match was about 19 minutes. Bhavinaben had also lost to Zhou in her first group stage match earlier this week.

On Sunday morning, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media and congratulated Bhavinaben for her feat at the mega sporting event. Heaping praises on the Gujarat lady, the chief minister termed her achievement as a "glorious gift" on the occasion of National Sports Day. Her victory will remarkable in various ways and it will sow seeds of inspiration in the hearts of millions who treasure the wish to play for the country, the CM said.

In the finale, Bhavinaben struggled a lot as she was apparently not able to execute her strategies in an effective manner against Zhou, who seemed to be in impressive form throughout the game. Zhou has five Paralympic medals. Bhavinaben had defeated Serbia's Borislava Peri Rankovi in the quarterfinals on Friday. Rankovi, who is the world's number two paddler, had bagged a gold medal at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.
