JORHAT: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said that the State Government had planted about 8 crore tree saplings in several parts of the State since his government came to power.

Inaugurating the plantation work of a medicinal plantation park titled 'Upabon' at Auniati Xatra premises at Kaliapani in Jorhat district, Sonowal said, "Our government has planted 8 crore tea saplings in 24parks across the State. We are planning to plant more tree saplings. We have also taken up several measures for the conservation of nature and tree plantation drive is also a part of it."

Sonowal added, "Assam and the Northeast are rich in bio diversity. The natural beauty of

this part in the country is a valuable asset for a better environment. We are fortunate that we have been born in this part of the world."

Addressing a meeting at Auniati Xatra namghar premises, Sonowal also said, "Sankardev and Madhabdev united the Assamese society with their socio-cultural activities. They are the social reformers of Assam and the Assamese society. Their contribution to the nation will always be remembered. They were the path finders of the Assamese people. We are

following their path to build a good nation. Spiritual learning is the essential part of human life to build a wise society and both the saints had done this impeccable work for us."

Sonowal who conferred the Damodar Dev Award to prominent litterateur and journalist Manoj Kumar Goswami on the auspicious day of the great Vaishnavite saint Mahapurush Madhabdeva's death anniversary on Monday, also said, "Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and Sri Sri Madhabdev are the guiding beacons for us in all spheres. Sri Sri Damodardev also is a great social reformer and Vaishnaviate saint of Assam. I am very happy to

confer this prestigious award to journalist and litterateur Manoj Kumar Goswami on this auspicious occasion."

Auniati Xatra xatradhikar (head priest) Pitambor Deva Goswami said, "Sri Sri Damodardev was also a saint in Assam during the 16th century. He was the contemporary of Sankardeva. He is a preceptor of the Ekasarana Dharma (shelter in one religion) propagated by Sankardeva. We have instituted this award in memory of this great Vaishnavite saint."

In the programme, Sonowal felicitated two senior devotees of Auniati Xatra, namely Bholaram Borbayan and Bashudev Gayan. Sonowal also flagged off a new ferry service between Kokilamukh and Kartik Chapori on Monday.
