Guwahati: The Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stone of Rupsi Airport at Rupsi.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha and Chairman of Airport Authority of India Guruprasad Mohapatra have also taken part in the programme through video conferencing.
Laying the foundation stone, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the initiative taken by the Prime Minister and Ministry of Civil Aviation has helped people's dream come true by modernizing and developing the Rupsi Airport in the state.
The Chief Minister thanked Suresh Prabhu for selecting Assam as the first station for International UDAN and said that it is a proud moment for Northeast as people can now think of flying to international destination right from Assam capital Guwahati. The CM also assured the people that they will be able to see flights operating from Rupsi Airport by September 2019.
In a press statement issued by the Airport Authority of India that the development of Rupsi Airport will generate employment, help people to export local products and will contribute in overall development of the adjoining areas.
Highlighting about the project, D K Kamra, RED, NER informed that the development works include construction of Terminal Building covering an area of 3500 sqm having peak hour capacity of 250 passengers, runway, taxiway, apron suitable for ATR 72-500 type of Aircraft operations with navigational aids, visual aids (precision approach path indicator), Apron floodlights, rainwater harvesting system, solid waste management system, horticulture works and boundary wall etc. The whole Airport is spread across an area of 337 acres of land. The cost for development works of Rupsi Airport is estimated at Rs. 69.0 Cr.
The Airport is being developed by Ministry of Civil Aviation for Regional connectivity scheme, RCS- Udaan (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) where common people can fly at a subsidized flight ticket fare. A true Jet Airline has been awarded to operate ATR -72 aircraft from Guwahati to Rupsi Airport. In addition, this airport will attract more Tourists and benefit air cargo transport in lower Assam region.
Rupsi Airport is located in Kokrajhar District of Assam. It is situated 23 km away from Dhubri town.
