CM Sonowal files nomination from Majuli constituency

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today filed his nominations from Majuli Constituency. The CM dressed in a traditional attire submitted his nominations before Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi on the last day of submitting nominations for the first phase of elections slated to be held on March 27. 

Sonowal accompanied by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and other Cabinet Ministers including Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP State President Ranjit Dass and its alliance party Assam Gana Parishad's Atul Bora took part in a rally before filing his nomination papers for assam assembly election.

Expressing gratitude to the people of Majuli, Sonowal sought the blessings of the people and to give him another opportunity to serve the state and initiate development under the leadership of Narendra Modi led BJP government.

Majuli which is also part of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency, is a reserved seat for the Scheduled tribes (ST).

Sonowal as a BJP candidate will be contesting from Majuli for the second consecutive term for the assembly polls. The Bhartiya Janata Party BJP made in roads towards the constituency in 2016 polls after Sonowal won from the prestigious constituency defeating sitting Congress MLA Rajib Lochan Pegu by a margin of 18,923 votes. Earlier the seat was hold by Pegu for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2011.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has fielded Pegu for the same seat.

The BJP on March 5 announced the first list of candidates. As per the list, of the 104 seats, the BJP will field its candidates in 70 constituencies. Its alliance parties AGP and UPPL will contest in 26 and eight constituencies respectively. The State has 126 Assembly seats.

State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass would fight from Patacharkuchi Assembly constituency while Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest the elections from Jalukbari. However, the party is yet to name its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming elections.
