Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday paid his respects and tributes to Assam's legendary playwright, actor, and director Natasurjya Phani Sarma on his 50th death anniversary.
Terming the contribution of the cultural icon towards art and cinema as 'invaluable', Sonowal wrote on Twitter, "An actor par excellence, playwright and director, Natasurjya Phani Sarma's sterling contribution towards art and cinema is invaluable. My homage to the cultural icon on his Smriti diwas."
Assam's Agriculture Minister Atul Bora also took to Twitter to pay homage to Sarma. Bora tweeted, "Heartfelt tributes to renowned actor, film director, and dramatist Natasurjya Phani Sarma on his death anniversary. For his immense contributions towards Assam's socio-cultural arenas, he will continue to be one of the leading lights for the Assamese society."
Phani Sarma was one of Assam's greatest theatre actors, playwrights, film actors, and film directors. He acted in the first Assamese film 'Joymati' in 1935. He acted in and directed 'Siraj' in 1948 and 'Pioli Phukan' in 1955.
