CM’s vigilance cell conducts raid at North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s residence

Sleuths of the CM Vigilance Cell and officials from the GST branch of the Sales Tax department in a joint operation, raided the residence of the North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on Monday.

SILCHAR:  Sleuths of the CM Vigilance Cell and officials from the GST branch of the Sales Tax department in a joint operation, raided the residence of the North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on Monday. The officials quizzed Kalyan Dey Purkayastha, the elder brother of the MLA who was in Guwahati recently. After the four-hour long investigation, the officials left the complex with a hint that a lot of discrepancies was found in GST filing. However they refused to make any comment. Additional Commissioner of the GST branch Anil Kumar Jalan and Biju Sarma, the Vigilance cell inspector led the raid today.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, the three times Congress MLA from the constituency had recently purchased Pramodnagar TE jointly with three others. A complaint was lodged with the CM vigilance cell that the dealing had violated the taxation guidelines. After the first vigilance raid in the tea estate, Purkayastha claimed that he had purchased the tea estate with the money he had earned as an MLA.

Later on Purkayastha said he had borrowed Rs 50 lakhs from his sister-in-law Mitali Dey Purkayastha who is a registered contractor with the PHE department. Meanwhile, the Vigilance cell summoned Kalyan Dey Purkayastha, an employee of the Zila Parishad and two other partners Suman Dhar and Kishor Das. However, till now neither the MLA was quizzed nor any one was arrested.

At around 11.30 am, the Vigilance and GST officials entered into the house of Purkayastha at Subhash Nagar area of Karimganj town. After a round of interrogation, they took Kalyan with them to a godown reportedly owned by them. However, within minutes they returned and the second round of quizzing started. Two neighbours were requested by the officials to act as witness.

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha refused to share his reaction on development. However in a video message, the Opposition leader in the state Assembly and senior Congress MLA Debobrata Saikia said, the BJP government had targetted the families of Purkayastha and the state Congress president Bhupen Bora for raising their voices against the corruption of the BJP leaders.
