MANGALDAI: A festive and colourful atmosphere prevailed in the campus of College of Teachers Education, Mangaldai here at Magistrate Colony as hundreds of alumni, students, teachers and former teachers in their colourful traditional attire assembled to celebrate the two-day duration inaugural function of the golden jubilee celebration of this premier academic institution on Wednesday.

At the humble initiative of a number of benevolent social activists of Mangaldai, the institution named as Mangaldai BT College was founded on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 1973. Since day one, this institution, the only institution of its kind not only in the undivided Mangaldai subdivision (with the areas of present the Udalguri district) of the Darrang district, but of the northern bank of River Brahmaputra has been playing a pivotal role in imparting education and training to the individual and institutional teachers. However, this premier institution in 1996 was recognized as a provincialized institution.

Unfurling the college flag on Tuesday morning, Principal of the College of Teachers Education, Mangaldai, Dr Mahindra Kaur marked the beginning of the inaugural function of the celebration. Eminent social activist, physician of repute and a scion of the Koch Royal Kingdom of Darrang,

Dr Amarendra Narayan Dev unfurled the flag of the golden jubilee committee accompanied by 49 prominent personalities of different fields of the district.

Industrialist of repute, Mukul Deka of SRD Group of Industries, first batch students of CTT Sarala Devi, women activist Rajashree Sarma Mishra, president of Darrang District Students’ Union Parag Saharia, senior media person Bhargab Kumar Das and Akhil Kalita, president of Alumni Association and retired Principal of DIET, Madhab Sarma, Hitesh Hazarika were among the invited guests to hoist the 49 flags. Finance Secretary of All Assam Students’ Union, Khanindra Rajbongshi in the function ceremonially laid floral wreath in memory of the martyrs who offered their supreme sacrifice for the motherland.

An alumnus-cum-retired Inspector of Schools Nabin Chandra Boro inaugurated the alumni meet organized on the occasion which was moderated by retired Principal of DIET, Madhab Sarma.

Earlier in her welcome speech, Principal of CTT, Dr Mahindra Kour recalled the high spirit, sacrifice and pain of the far-sighted great souls who played a vital role in founding this institution 50 years back and offered heartfelt tribute on behalf of the college fraternity. She also gave a detailed note on the achievement of the institution. The students and the alumnus added a new colour to the festive golden jubilee celebration with their performance of melodious chorus.

On the second day’s programme, retired Professor of Gauhati University, Dr Moromi Goswami, Head of the Education department of Tezpur Central University, Dr Nil Ratan Roy and one of the founder teachers of the college, Dr Birendra Kumar Deka took part in the open meeting on Wednesday.
