TEZPUR: With the recent announcement of the Government of Assam to provincialize college of Assam, students of Commerce in Tezpur College and their guardians have expressed annoyance over the government's apathy towards their long-pending issue of non-provincialization of their department.

The Faculty of Commerce was established in the year 2007 with governing body resolution passed in 2005. They said that the Faculty of Commerce had been functioning effectively from the session 2007-2008 with increasing enrolment each passing year. Currently the Faculty of Commerce has a student strength of around 1,100.

However, the students are deprived of the government scheme of free admission as this stream is not yet provincialized. The students reiterated that because of the high admission fees, the financially weak students are compelled to take up part-time jobs due to which their attendance and studies are hampered. The increasing enrolment of Tezpur College prominently displays the high demand for a second government commerce institution in Tezpur. However, the government has turned a blind eye towards this prestigious institute, the students alleged.
