DOOMDOOMA: In view of exorbitant municipal tax imposed by the State Government and notice being issued by Doomdooma Municipal Board (DMB) thereupon, a representative type general meeting of the tax payers was convened at Doomdooma Natya Mandir on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by journalist Arjun Baruah and was addressed by several speakers including Gobind Phookan, Arjun Baruah and Dhiren Deka. DMB issued a notice to increase the municipal tax on the holdings in the municipal area by 20 to 25 times more from April.

The meeting criticized the State Government’s failure to check the spiralling price rise on all the essential commodities, including LPG cylinders. Moreover, the purchasing capacity of the consumers was on the decline in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic. On the top of it, this hike of municipal taxes, if imposed, would create havoc in the lives of the people. The meeting expressed deep concern over the increase in taxes and resolved to form a committee to take up the matter with DMB on behalf of the tax payers. An 11-member committee was formed in this regard.
