UDALGURI: "A community cannot exist without language and literature," said Tarapati Upadhyaya, the literary pensioner of Udalguri, on Sunday. He was addressing a meeting at Suklai on the occasion of the 12th triennial conference of Udalguri district Nepali Sahitya Sabha.

He also urged the new generation of people to respect language, literature, and culture. The two day-long programme of the conference began with a cultural competition which was followed by delegates' session. The delegates' session was inaugurated by Laxmi Sendai, the general secretary of Asom Gorkha Sanmellan. The session was presided over by Gayatri Bhatatrai, the president, and the annual activity report was presented by Ram Upadhyay, the general secretary of Udalguri district Nepali Sahitya Sabha. The delegates' session selected Laxman Adhikari as president and Mohan Kumar Chhetry as general secretary for a new term.

The meeting strongly condemned the order of the BTR Secretary on eviction in the region. The Nepali Sahitya Sabha has threatened to launch a stir if such eviction in the region was implemented. The programme on the following day began with the hoisting of a flag which was followed by a tribute to the martyrs. A literary session was also conducted by Sahadev Gautam, the literary secretary of Udalguri district Nepali Sahitya Sabha. The open session was inaugurated by Puspadhar Bastola, litterateur and Principal of Udalguri H S School. He appealed to the community leaders to serve the people without aspiring for post, honour and wealth.

The meeting, which was also addressed by Rudra Baral, the general secretary of ANSS, nominated MCLA Madhav Chhetry, Bhergaon MCLA Daobaisa Boro and others. Noted artiste Krishna Kanta Mizar, Dukhuna Newar and others enthralled the audience during the cultural night programme.
