Community prayer programme held for recovery of BKWAC chief

LAKHIMPUR: A community prayer programme was organized by various frontal organizations of the Bodo community on Saturday evening in Dhemaji to pray for the immediate recovery of the Bodo Kachahari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) chief Mihiniswar Basumatary.

Noted as a non-compromising revolutionary leader, politician, social worker and a writer-cum-poet of the Boro community, Mihiniswar Basumatary is currently undergoing treatment at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since June 16. Prior to it, a surgical operation was conducted to him on March 12 at a private sector hospital in Guwahati for the removal of gallbladder stone. Then he was shifted to Chennai and another surgical operation was done to him there. He was brought back to Guwahati on June 12 and once again admitted at GMCH on June 16 for further treatment.

The community prayer programme to pray for the immediate recovery of the Bodo community leader was organized at the head office of the Dhemaji district unit of the United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO). It was held under the management of Dhemaji UBPO president Ratiram Basumatary and inaugurated by UBPO central committee adviser Lalit Chandra Boro.

Taking part in the event, UBPO central committee president Manuranjan Basumatary delivered a lecture on the revolutionary, social, political life and works of Mihiniswar Basumatary. Dhemaji district Boro Sahitya Sabha adviser Sushil Basumatary, secretary Swrjila Owary, Dhemaji ABSU vice-president Hiranya Swargiyary, Dhemaji district ABWF general secretary Bharati Brahma, adviser Sobharani Basumatary, member Madhuri Basumatary, Undivided Lakhimpur District Ex-BLT Welfare Society president Sanchuma Basumatary were among them who took part in the event. Over hundred members from the Bodo frontal organizations lit earthen lamps to pray for the immediate recovery of the Bodo community leader.

Notably, Mihiniswar Basumatary was born to Gangaram Basumatary and Mwnsari Basumatary in 1965 at Taktara village under Banargaon area of Kokrajhar district. In 1976, the family shifted to Jonai subdivision of undivided Lakhimpur district and started to live permanently at Somokong Boro Gaon. After matriculation, Mihiniswar Basumatary studied graduation at Bongaigaon College. At that time he joined the Bodoland Movement carried out by ABSU under the leadership of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and served as central committee organizing secretary of the organization. In 1996 he joined in Boro Liberation Tigers’ Force (BLTF) and served as organizing secretary of that organization too. He is one of the signatories of two Bodo Peace Accords.

On June 17 in 2014, UBPO was formed at Sanjari Nwgwr of Dhemaji district under his leadership in order to ensure all-round development of over ten lakh Bodo people living in 22 districts of the State outside BTAD. He also served as a teacher at the Satish Basumatary Boro High School and took voluntary retirement in 2015. After inking of the Third Boro Peace Accord on January 27 in 2020, Mihiniswar Basumatary took charge as chief of the BKWAC. He has written several anthologies of poems along with an anthology of articles.
