LAKHIMPUR: In Lakhimpur, the Congress activists have continued stir against hike in the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) along with the essential commodities.

On Thursday, the activists of the political party, led by former Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Buragohain, staged three-hour long sit-in at Panigaon Chariali under the constituency flaying the government regarding the issue. Senior Congress leader-cum-former vice-president of Lakhimpur District Congress Committee (LDCC), Baparam Das, former chairman of Lakhimpur SC Development Board, Bhupen Hazarika, District Youth Congress administrative general secretary, Bharat Saikia, former Zila Parishad members Brojen Saikia, Sanjib Das were also present in the protest programme along with many other dignitaries of the brother-sister organizations of the political party.

Addressing the protesters, Ghana Buragohain hit out at the governments at the Centre and in the State regarding the issue. "The exorbitant prices of petro-products have played the role of catalysts in the rise in the prices of essential commodities. It has adversely affected the low-earners of the society. Despite such circumstances, it is unfortunate that the Union and State governments have still not taken any effective steps to control the sky-rocketing prices of petro-products and essential commodities and have put the common people in a miserable plight," Ghana Buragohain stated while expressing his resentment over the issue. The protesters slammed the governments at the Centre and in the State by shouting a number of slogans and displaying placards against price hike.
