SILCHAR: Eviction against alleged encroachers in Ichhabil TE in Patharkandi had started to generate much political heat as opposition parties like Congress and AIUDF on Tuesday visited the site and claimed that the drive was 'inhuman' since a number of families had valid land documents that suggested the constructions they made were not illegal. UDF had threatened to move the court against the eviction drive while Congress extended solidarity towards the evicted families. The Congress delegation, led by MLA Rokibul Islam, was initially barred from visiting the garden as they reached there at night. After a brief altercation with the police only 12 persons were allowed to meet the families whose houses were demolished last Sunday. However a group of tea garden labourers stopped the Congress delegation and argued that their land was forcibly grabbed by the illegal intruders and hence the opposition party should keep their plight in consideration too. Hussain, after meeting the evicted families told the mediapersons that they condemned the 'inhuman' eviction as the families were in great trouble after the devastating flood.

Earlier on the day, the UDF delegation, led by MLA Aminul Islam claimed that they had verified the land documents and were convinced that a number of families had been residing in the Ichhabil area for decades. Islam said, they failed to understand why the government was in so much hurry to demolish the houses just after the flood. Further, rehabilitation of the evicted families should have been decided prior to the eviction drive.
